My opinion.
In my opinion, lowering the drinking age would be a bad choice. The reason I say this is because lowering the drinking age would be medically irresponsible. I believe this because the brain's frontal lobes, continue to develop through adolescence and young adulthood. Alcohol consumption can interfere with this development. This potentially can cause chronic problems. These problems include things such as greater vulnerability to addiction, dangerous risk-taking behavior, reduced decision-making ability, memory loss, depression, violence, and suicide.
Although I do not agree with lowering the drinking age, I can see why it would be safer. I think if we did lower it that more kids would drink irresponsibly. But, if we did lower it kids would feel more safe drinking in an open enviornment although, lowering MLDA 21 to 18 will irresponsibly allow a greater segment of the population to drink alcohol in bars and nightclubs, which are not safe environments. If some one were to pass out from binge drinking, I do not think they would be as hesitant to call an ambulance. This could save many teen lives.
I also think the MLDA should stay at 21 because people tend to be more mature and responsible at 21 as opposed to 18.
Eighteen year olds are typically entering a new phase of independence from their parents by going to college or the workforce, and are more susceptible to binge drinking, and other irresponsible behavior due to lack of maturity. By lowering the age to 18, this causes them to be even more irresponsible.
Another reason to not lower the MLDA would be because this causes social pressure. At the age of 18 young adults just want to fit in. Therefore, they will do anything it takes to be socially accepted. This is where binge drinking, beer pong, and other irresponsible actions come into play. Older kids and adults may give alcoholic beverages to minors more frequently, because it is illegal. (18 year olds cannot get it) If you keep lowering the drinking age, the younger you lower it the more they give to kids even younger. For example, 21 year olds supply the 18 year olds with it. If you were to lower the drinking age to 18, they would supply the alcohol to kids in the age range of 14-16.
