What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection caused by sexual contact. Chlamydia can be passed during vaginal, anal, or oral sex. Chlamydia can cause pelvic infection. It is also known as the most common bacterial infection in the United States. An infected mother can also pass chlamydia to her baby during vaginal childbirth.
When testing for Chlamydia, there are a few different things your doctor can use. One thing is he (or she) will use a swab to take a sample from the urethra in men (or from the cervix in women) and then will send it to a laboratory to be analyzed. In other tests they can check a urine sample for the presence of the bacteria.
Signs/Symptoms:
Signs and Symptoms for women include: - An increase in vaginal discharge caused by an inflamed cervix.
- The need to urinate more frequently; or pain while urinating
- Pain during sexual intercourse or bleeding after sex.
- Lower abdominal pains.
- irregular menstrual bleeding.
Signs and Symptoms for men include:
- A white/cloudy watery discharge from the penis that may stain underwear.
-a burning sensation and or pain while passing urine.
- pain and swelling in testicles.
Treatments:
Your doctor can prescribe medication. With treatment, the infection should clear up in about a week or two. After taking antibiotics, you should be re-tested to be sure the infection is 100% cured.
Possible Health Complications/Health Consequences:
1. In women, untreated infection can spread into the uterus or fallopian tubes and cause pelvic inflammatory disease.
2. The damage can lead to chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and potentially fatal ectopic pregnancy.
3. Complications among men are rare. Infection can sometimes spread to the epididymis and cause pain, fever, and sterility.
